｢요한복음｣ 8장과 ｢장자·소요유｣ 비교고찰

Comparison and Examination of John 8 and Zhuangzi’s Xiaoyaoyou(逍遙遊)

본 논문은 ｢요한복음｣ 8장과 ｢장자·소요유｣가 집필된 목적이 전혀 달라 같은 맥락에서 나란히 읽을 수 없는 큰 차이를 갖고 있지만, 문학적 표현이나, 전개해나가는 방식이 서로 닮아 있다. 이러한 이유로 두 문헌을 비교, 고찰하고자 시도한 논문이다. ｢요한복음｣ 8장은 예수님의 신원을 분명하게 알려주신다. 구체적으로 이야기 해 본다면, 진리에 대한 말씀과 참된 자유는 육화한 말씀이신 예수님으로부터 온다는 것을 밝히셨지만, 그분이 누구신지 모르는 유다인들은 이야기의 핵심을 벗어나 예수님을 궁지에 몰면서 반문하는 모습으로 묘사된다. 유다인들은 썩어 없어질 육체를 따르기 때문에 영적인 생명을 유지할 수 없다. ｢장자·소요유｣는 장자내편의 시작이자 종결이다. 장자는 비록 육체적으로는 어찌 해 볼 도리가 없는 현실에 직면했더라도, 마음만큼은 절대자유를 누릴 수 있다는 것을 보여주었으며, 이러한 초월자가 되기 위해서는 세상이 열광하는 이름을 남기지 말고, 공적이나 공덕에도 연연하지 말고, 무심으로 세상을 대하면서, 마침내 나와 대상의 경계가 아무런 구분이 없는 경지에 나아간 지인, 신인, 성인의 모습을 보여주었다. 이러한 경지에 이르기 위해서는 ‘비움’과 ‘잊음’이 동반되어야 한다는 것을 주장하였다.

The purpose of this paper is to compare and examine the Gospel of John 8 and the Zhuangzi’s ‘Xiaoyaoyou’. Although these two texts were written for completely different purposes and cannot be read in the same context, they are similar in their literary expressions and narrative structures. The Gospel of John 8 clarifies the identity of Jesus. Specifically, it reveals that the word of truth and true freedom come from Jesus, who is the incarnate Word. However, the Jews, who do not know who he is, are portrayed as questioning Jesus in a way that strays from the core of the story. The Jews cannot maintain spiritual life because they follow the corruptible flesh. The Zhuangzi’s ‘Xiaoyaoyou’ is both the beginning and the end of the Zhuangzi’s inner chapters. Zhuangzi shows that even though he is faced with a reality that cannot be changed physically, he can enjoy absolute freedom in his mind. To become such a transcendent being, one must not leave a name that the world is passionate about, not be attached to fame or merit, and treat the world with indifference, eventually reaching the realm where the boundary between oneself and the object is indistinguishable. Zhuangzi argued that this realm can only be reached through ‘emptiness’ and ‘forgetting’.
