The Effects of Parental Abuse on Delinquency of School Dropouts: Sequential Mediation Effects of Depression and Impulsivity

Objective: This study examines the processes linking parental abuse and delinquency of school dropouts, focusing on the sequential mediation role of depression and impulsivity. Methods: Data were 733 school dropouts (boys: 414 (56.6%), girls: 319 (43.5%)), who participated in the 2013 Panel Survey of school dropouts conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. The survey data analyzed the mediating effect between variables using SPSS Process Macro Model 6. Results: First, parental abuse had a significant direct effect on delinquency of school dropouts. Second, parental abuse had an indirect effect on delinquency of school dropouts through impulsivity. Third, the indirect path linking parental abuse and delinquency of school dropouts through depression and impulsivity was significant, and the sequential mediational model was supported. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study implications on the case conceptualization and intervention strategy with a focus on the delinquency of school dropouts and future research are discussed.
