Parental Abuse and Smartphone Overdependence among Out-of-school Adolescents: Dual Mediation Effects of Self-esteem and Depression

Objective: This study aims to verify the influence of parental abuse on smartphone overdependence among out-of-school adolescents and the dual mediation effects of self-esteem and depression. Methods: Using a sample of 452 out-of-school adolescents from the Panel Survey of School Dropouts, this study analyzed mediation effects through SPSS Process Macro Model 6. Results: First, parental abuse had a positive and significant influence on out-of-school adolescents’ smartphone overdependence. Second, out-of-school adolescents’ depression mediated the influence of parental abuse on smartphone overdependence, but out-of-school adolescents’ self-esteem did not. Third, out-of-school adolescents’ self-esteem and depression serially dual-mediated the influence of parental abuse on smartphone overdependence. Conclusions: Based on the findings, this study suggestes diverse ways to deal with smartphone overdependence among out-of-school adolescents
