현대 서원의 건립과 운영 방식

Establishment and Operation Methods of Contemporary Seowon: Focusing on ‘Hwasan Seowon’ in Chilgok-gun

이 논문은 칠곡군에 위치한 화산서원을 중심으로 현대 서원의 건립 과정과활동 양상, 그리고 운영 방식을 검토한 것이다. 화산서원은 그 전신인 화산서당을 영남대학교 민속촌으로 이건하여 유지하면서 서원 건물을 새롭게 지어복원했다는 점에서 특징적이다. 화산서원의 운영주체인 인동장씨 화산서당 종중은 화산서원을 복원하면서화산서원 보존회를 결성하였다. 화산서원 보존회는 화산서당 종중에서 서원과관련된 모든 역할을 분리하여 도맡음으로써 서원 운영의 효율성을 확보하였다. 그런데 이러한 보존회의 역할은 서원운영을 분리한 종중의 활동에 도움을주고 있다. 즉, 보존회의 결성은 중중으로부터 서원을 분리한 것이라기보다화산서당 종중과 화산서원 보존회가 상보적 관계 속에서 이원적 운영 체계를구축한 것이라 볼 수 있다. 다시말해서 상호보완적 관계의 전략적 분리이다. 서원의 관리뿐만 아니라 도시화로 인해 증가한 종중의 자산을 공정하고 효율적으로 관리하는 주체로서 보존회의 역할이 중요하게 인식되고 있다. 이러한 서원의 운영방식은 상대적으로 종가의 위상이 약화되고, 계보성이 결여된도시사회에서 종족조직의 현대화된 정체성을 확립하고 정서적 안정감을 확보하는 데 기여한다. 또한 전통사회와 달리 분산성이 점증된 종족집단의 연대를지향하는 과정과도 관련된다.

This paper examines the construction process, activities, and operation methods of contemporary Seowon, focusing on Hwasan Seowon located in Chilgok-gun. Hwasan Seowon is characterized by its relocation and maintenance of Hwasanseodang, its predecessor, to Yeungnam University Folk Village, and the restoration of the Seowon building. The Hwasan Seodang clan formed the Hwasan Seowon Preservation Society while restoring Hwasan Seowon. The Hwasan Seowon Preservation Society secured the efficiency of the operation of the seowon by separating all roles related to the seowon from the Hwasan Seodang clan. However, the role of this preservation society is rather helping the clan's activities. The formation of the Preservation Society can be seen as the establishment of a dual operating system in a complementary relationship between the Hwasan Seodang clan and the Hwasan Seowon Preservation Society. This is a strategic separation of complementary relationships. In other words, it is a complementary separation. In addition to the management of seowon, the role of the preservation society in fair and efficient management of the property of the clan increased due to urbanization is recognized as important. This methods of operation of seowon contributes to establishing a modernized identity of ethnic groups in contemporary urban society and securing emotional stability.
