This paper delves into the works of two influential literary figures, Edgar Allan Poe and T. S. Eliot, to explore their notion of vortex. While Poe’s “A Descent into the Maelström” presents a harrowing tale of a man’s encounter with a natural vortex, Eliot’s The Waste Land explores the destructive power of natural elements and their symbolic implications. Through a comparative analysis of these works, this paper aims to uncover the thematic and symbolic connections between Poe and Eliot’s vortex, shedding light on the psychological and existential aspects of human experience.
