사하르 칼리파 소설 『뜨거웠던 봄』에 나타난 인물 유형 연구

A study on Character Types in Sahar Khalifah’s Novel 『Hot Spring』

Sahar Khalifah becomes familiar to readers by depicting various types of Palestinians who resist Israel. In this paper, we apply the drama character analysis framework to investigate the character types of Palestinians resisting Israel in the novel “Hot Spring” through three characters. Firstly, Ahmad, an ordinary student living in Palestine, faces a drastic change. Upon entering an Israeli settlement, he is accused of planting landmines, leading to his arrest and torture. Released from prison, he comes to understand the reality of Palestine, evolving from a static figure into a dynamic person of action. Moreover, he stands out by shifting his method of resistance against Israel from non-violent to violent means. Similarly, Majid evolves from an ordinary young man with dreams of becoming a famous singer to embracing a spirit of violent resistance against Israel as a member of a revolutionary group. He transitions from fighting for national liberation to becoming a self-interested seeker of power, showing his multifaceted character. Suad's mother, portrayed as a flat and static figure, silently takes on the role of household head in her imprisoned husband's absence, exemplifying a supportive mother who uplifts the spirits of young people destabilized by chaos. This study analyzes the character types in Sahar Khalifah's works, highlighting various aspects of Palestinian resistance against Israel.
