A Study on Island Tourism Sustainability: Assessing Tourist Perspectives Using Revised IPA

목적: 섬 관광지에서 개발과 보존의 균형을 이루는 지속가능성을 추구하기 위한 정책적 성과를 높이기 위해서는 관광객의 관점을 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 이 연구의 목적은 지속가능성의 3대 기본 축(tripple bottom lin)으로 제시되고 있는 사회적, 환경적, 경제적 지속가능성에 관한 관리에 대하여 섬을 방문한 관광객이 어떻게 인식하고 있는지를 평가하고자 한다. 방법: 평가 도구로는 Martilla & James가 개발하고 Deng이 수정 제안한 수정된 중요도-성취도 분석(Importance-Performance Analysis: IPA)을 활용하여 연구를 수행하고자 한다. 중국 위주도 관광지를 방문한 경험이 있는 중국 내국인 관광객을 대상으로 편의표본추출 방법을 사용하여 데이터를 수집하였다. 2023년 11월1일부터 11월7일까지 온라인 설문조사를 실시하여 300부의 유효한 설문지를 최종 분석에 사용하였다. 결과: 수정된 IPA 기법을 활용하여 분석한 결과, 관광객 입장에서는 관광 상품이나 서비스 특히, 기념품과 교통 수단의 가격이 적정한 수준에서 관리되는 것이 중요하며 이를 위해 우선적 집중이 필요하다고 하였다. 그리고, 관광객들은 위주도의 섬 관광을 통한 경제적 가치 창출에 대한 성과는 전반적으로 높게 평가하면서도, 위주도의 산업과 지역경제가 지나치게 관광에 의존하고 있다는 점에 대해서는 다소 우려를 나타내고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 결론: 학술적 시사점은 첫째, 지속가능성을 추구하고자 하는 방향 설정에 있어 동일한 요인이지만 세부 속성에 따라 관광객의 평가가 달라질 수 있음을 시사한다. 둘째, 지속가능성에 대하여 외부자인 관광객 관점에서 평가했다는데 의의가 있다.

Purpose: Achieving a balance between development and conservation for sustainability in island tourism destinations necessitates a profound understanding of tourists' perspectives. This research aims to assess how tourists perceive the social, environmental, and economic sustainability aspects, often referred to as the Triple Bottom Line. Methods: Utilizing the Martilla & James Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA), with Deng's modifications, this study focuses on Chinese domestic tourists with experience in Weizhou Island in China. Through convenience sampling, data were collected via online surveys from November 1 to November 7, 2023, resulting in 300 valid responses for final analysis. Results: The revised IPA technique revealed that, from the tourist's standpoint, effective management of tourism products and services, especially souvenir prices and transportation costs, at an appropriate level is crucial. Tourists emphasize the need for prioritized attention to achieve this. Furthermore, while tourists generally rate the economic value creation through dominant island tourism positively, concerns arise regarding excessive dependence on tourism in both industry and regional economies. Conclusion: This study highlights two key academic implications. Firstly, it emphasizes that although similar factors contribute to the pursuit of sustainability, tourists' evaluations may vary depending on specific attributes. Secondly, evaluating sustainability from the perspective of external stakeholders, such as tourists, holds significance.
