Jonathan Edwards’ sermons and theological writings tend to emphasize the true church or Christianity through an converting act of believers. Given this, it is not surprising that a number of scholars attempted to address the issues of religious affection, awakening, and conversion. A group of scholars regards Edwards as a preparationalist who maintained that sinners could prepare the salvation by the converting act and good works. Some scholars contend that while Edward abandoned the doctrine of preparation, his predecessors were advocates of preparationalism, which is quite different from Calvinism. As many reformed scholars rightly point out, one sould read Edwards’ view of conversion in terms of the knowledge of Christ. Despite the significance of Christ to understand his doctrine of conversion, his view has not been properly appreciated in studies of his theology. This article demonstrates that in attempting to understand Edwards’ perspective of awakening and conversion, Edwards employed three kinds of knowledge of Christ, that is Christ as mediator, union with Christ, and communicatio gratiarum(communication of grace) based on communicatio idiomatum(communication of attributes).
