본 논문은 교회와 학계에서 일반적으로 사용되는 “영적 각성”이라는 용어에 관한 성경적 근거를 살펴본다. 학자들은 “영적 각성”을 언급하면서, 이 개념이 신·구약 성경에서 근거를 찾을 수 있는 점을 강조한다. 그러나 적어도 용어 특면에서 “영적 각성”이라는 합성 표현은 성경에 등장하지 않으며, 더 나아가 그 시작은 종교개혁 이후에 형성된 개념이다. 문제는 이 용어가 무분별하게 사용되고, 그 개념을 성경에서 찾으려는 시도는 성공적이지 못했기에 그 개념이 왜곡되었다는 것이다. 따라서 본 논문은 소위 “영적 각성”이라는 표현이 과연 성경적이며, 그리고 그것이 성경적으로 무슨 의미인지를 바울 서신을 통해 살펴보고자 한다. 바울 서신을 선택한 것은 그의 서신들은 교회의 문제를 직접적으로 다루고 있다는 점에서 오늘날의 상황과 유비해 볼 수 있는 요소가 많고, 또한 한 저자가 다양한 말씀을 남기셨기에 다양한 상황 내에서 그 쓰임을 살펴볼 수 있는 근거를 제시해 주기 때문이다. 다만, 본 논문은 “영적 각성”을 “영적”과 “각성”을 구분하여 다룰 것인데, 이는 앞서 언급했듯이 “영적 각성”이라는 표현이 성경에 등장하지 않기 때문이다. 본 논문은 바울 서신에 근거해 “영적” “각성”을 언급해야 한다면, 그것은 하나님 앞에서의 온전한 삶을 영위하기 위한 분별과 결단을 의미하는 것이지, 어떠한 외적 현상을 의미하는 것이 아니라는 점을 지적한다.

I examine the biblical basis for the commonly used term “spiritual awakening” in church and academia. Scholars often mention “spiritual awakening” and emphasize that this concept can be found in the Bible. However, at least in terms of terminology, the composite expression “spiritual awakening” is not found in it. Furthermore, it is clear that the origin of this term is a concept that appeared in modern churches since the Reformation. Because this term is used indiscriminately and attempts to define it in the basis of the Bible are not successful, its biblical concept was distorted. Therefore, I try to explore whether the expression, “spiritual awakening,” is genuinely biblical and, if so, what it can mean, through an examination of Paul’s letters, which contain both many elements that can be relevant to contemporary situations and various teachings that can be examined in various contexts. I will distinguish between “spiritual” and “awakening,” as mentioned earlier, and analyze each of them because the term “spiritual awakening” itself is not found in the Bible. Through this thesis, I will emphasize that if we are to discuss “spiritual awakening” based on Paul’s letters, it means inner discernment and determination for leading a holy life before God, rather than an external impact.
