초대교회의 찬송은 시편, 캔티클, 신령한 노래, 새로운 기독교적인 노래 등 네 가지로 분류될 수 있다. 그중 초대교회의 새로운 찬송에 관한 연구는 국내 교회음악학 분야에서 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 따라서 그 부분에 대한 기초적인 연구가 꼭 필요한 상황이다. 사도 바울은 찬송의 사람으로서 그 당시 노래된 것으로 추정되는 새로운 찬송들의 단편들을 그의 서신들에 남겨 놓았다. 랄프 마틴은 신약성경에 있는 초대교회의 찬송들 또는 그 단편들 중 12개가 바울 서신에 포함되어 있다고 말한다. 그러나 바울 서신에 있는 초대교회의 새로운 찬송들에 대해서는 학자들마다 견해가 다양하고, 일부 구절들에 대해서는 찬송으로 인정할 수 있느냐에 대한 기본적인 논란이 아직도 계속되고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 에베소서 5:14, 빌립보서 2:5/6-11, 골로새서 1:15-20, 디모데전서 3:16, 디모데후서 2:11-13 등은 새로운 찬송 또는 찬송의 단편이라고 할 수 있다. 우리는 이 구절들을 통해 바울이 그의 서신들에서 찬송을 통해 전하고자 했던 메시지의 핵심은 예수 그리스도 중심의 신앙과 삶이었음을 확인하게 된다.
The hymns of the early church can be classified into four categories, such as psalms, canticles, spiritual songs, and new Christian songs. Among them, the new hymns of the early church have hardly been studied in the field of church music in Korea. Therefore, a general study of this subject is quite necessary. The apostle Paul, a man of hymn, included in his epistles the fragments of the new hymns supposedly sung at that time. Ralph Martin says that 12 of the hymns or hymnic fragments of the early church in the New Testament are included in the Pauline Epistles. However, scholars have various opinions on the new hymns of the early church in the Pauline epistles, and there are ongoing basic debates in whether some passages can be recognized as hymns or not. Nevertheless, Ephesians 5:14, Philippians 2:5/6-11, Colossians 1:15-20, 1 Timothy 3:16, and 2 Timothy 2:11-13 can be identified as new hymns or hymnic fragments. Through these passages, we confirm that the core of the message which Paul wanted to deliver through hymns in his letters was the faith and life centered on Jesus Christ.
