Aviation English training plan for strengthening communication between controllers and pilots

The purpose of this study was to investigate and gain insight into the communication difficulties experienced by aviation pilots and traffic controllers, and to identify suitable learning methods that can improve their aviation English skills. The study involved conducting in-depth interviews with six participants, comprising three pilots and three controllers, in accordance with the research objectives. The findings of the study indicated that communication barriers arose from difficulties in comprehending plain language, understanding the pronunciation of individuals from diverse nationalities, and inadequate English vocabulary, all of which hindered effective radiotelephony communication. To overcome these obstacles, the participants recommended the development of educational materials that included voice learning materials featuring authentic radiotelephony communication recordings and vocabulary-centered learning materials on aviation English that could be used appropriately in emergency situations. Additionally, the participants expressed the need for educational approaches that enable learners to access such learning materials through smartphone apps, thus providing flexibility and accessibility to learners, regardless of time and location constraints. By leveraging smartphone apps that can offer customized educational content based on the requirements of the research participants, this study identifies a promising approach to enhance the effectiveness of the learning process.
