Learners’ Perception of EAP Learning Using AI Chatbot App

This study explores college learners' self-perception of English proficiency, awareness of the importance of English, and perception of English classes using AI chatbots for EAP courses. Over 16-week study, 51 students taking College English 1 used AI chatbot smart phone applications under the guidance of professors. Participants completed quantitative questionnaires to evaluate their perceptions before and after the study, and qualitative data were gathered through two close interviews. Results showed slight improvement in English skills for those with 1-5 and 6-10 years of English study. All learners recognized the importance of learning English, with an increase in awareness of the English writing function. However, the use of AI chatbots did not have a significant positive effect on increasing motivation and interest in English. These findings suggest that specific alternatives should be considered for the level of learners and learning goals when using AI chatbots in EAP classes. It is essential to analyze the functions of various AI chatbots and teach them with detailed instructions to determine their effectiveness. Although AI chatbots can increase exposure and output of English outside of class hours, more research is needed to understand how they can be effectively utilized in college English classrooms.
