죄수의 딜레마에서 협력을 어떻게 설명할 것인가? 보수, 선호 그리고 선택 사이의 관계를 중심으로

How should we interpret cooperation in the prisoner’s dilemma games? A study on the relationship between payoffs, preferences, and choices

일회 죄수의 딜레마 게임에서 협력이 관찰될 때 이를 어떻게 해석해야 하는가? 이를 둘러싸고 다양한 해석이 경합해왔는데, 이들 해석의 차이는 보수, 선호, 선택이라는 세 개념간의 관계를 어떻게 설정하는가와 관련이 있다. 본 연구에서는 보수, 선호, 선택이라는 세 개념간의 관계에 대한 서로 다른 해석을 세 가지로 정리해서 분류해보고, 각각의 입장에서 실제 경기자들의 선택이 보수를 기초로 한 예측과 다를 때 이를 어떻게 설명하는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이와 관련하여 죄수의 딜레마 게임에서 협력의 선택을 설명하는 유용한 개념으로 고려되고 있는 타인을 고려한 선호체계라는 개념이 아마티아 센의 합리적 호구 비판에 적용되는지의 여부를 살펴보고, 이러한 비판으로부터 벗어날 수 있는 하나의 가능성을 검토해본다.

When cooperation is observed in a one-shot prisoner's dilemma game, how should we interpret it? Various interpretations have competed over this question, and these interpretations are related to how one establishes the relationship between three concepts: payoffs, preferences, and choices. In this paper, I categorize three different understandings on the relationship between payoffs, preferences, and choices, and examine how each of these understandings explains the deviation of players' actual choices from the predictions based on payoffs. Furthermore, in this regard, we will examine whether the notion of others-regarding preferences, which has been considered a useful concept for explaining cooperative choices in prisoner's dilemma games, is subject to Sen's critique of “rational fools”, and we will consider one possibility for escaping this criticism.
