서암(西巖) 이진백(李震白)론

Seoam Lee Jin-baek theory

서암(西巖) 이진백(李震白, 1622~1707)은 조선 중기에 활동한 문인으로서 아직 학계에서 주목받지 못해 연구가 이루어지지 않은 인물이다. 본 연구는 이진백에 대한 개괄적인 연구를 통해 이 분야의 초석을 놓고자 한다. 그러기 위해 이진백의 가계와 충남 태안⋅서산에 정착하여 세거하게 된 이유를 살펴보았다. 이진백의 가계는 조부 이창주(李昌胄, 1567~1648)가 충남 서산시 운산면 여미리에 입향(入鄕)한 이래 이곳의 유력 가문과 혼맥을 통해 발전하였다. 교유관계는, 이진백은 남용익⋅김수항⋅조사석⋅정치화⋅박세채 등과 폭넓게 교유하였는데, 특히 남구만(南九萬, 1629~1711)과는 젊은 시절부터 노년에 이르기까지 교유하며 지냈다. 과거에는 38세로 늦게 급제하였으나 문학적으로 뛰었났기에 택당 이식 등 당대 영향력 있는 문인들과 접촉하였다. 이진백의 생애는 7언고시와 변려문으로 각각 지은 <술회자서(述懷自敍))에 잘 드러나 있다. 행장은 이 자료들을 토대로 지은 것이며, 특히 이진백에 대한 당대 문인들의 평가를 중심으로 이루어져 있다. 7언고시 <술회자서(述懷自敍))는 이진백이 태어난 사실부터 결혼과 과거 시험 및 관직생활, 은퇴 후 충남 태안⋅서산에 은거하며 여생을 마무리하는 내용이 상세하게 기록되어 있는 장편이다. 변려문으로도 같은 제목의 작품이 있는데, 7언고시와 내용이 비슷하며 선후를 봤을 때 7언 고시가 먼저 창작되고 그것을 바탕으로 변려문이 지어진 것으로 파악하였다.

Seoam Lee Jin-baek (李震白, 1622-1707) was a writer active in the mid- Joseon Dynasty who has not yet received attention in academia and has not been studied. This study seeks to lay the foundation for this field through a general study of Lee Jin-baek. To do so, we looked into Lee Jin-baek's family lineage and the reasons why he settled in Seosan. Lee Jin-baek's family line developed through marriage with influential families there after his grandfather Lee Chang-ju (李昌胄, 1567-1648) moved to Yeomi-ri, Unsan-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. Lee Jin-baek had extensive social relationships with Nam Yong-ik, Kim Su-hang, Jo Jo-seok, Jeong Chi-hwa, and Park Se-chae, and especially with Nam Gu-man (南九萬, 1629-1711) from his youth to old age. In the past, he passed the state examination late at the age of 38, but because he excelled in literature, he entered the university and came into contact with influential writers of the time. Lee Jin-baek's life is well revealed in <Sulhoejaseo(述懷自敍)>, written in seven words and byeonryeomun, respectively. Haengjang was built based on these materials, and in particular, it is centered on the evaluation of Lee Jin-baek by contemporary writers. The 7-word notice <Sulhoejaseo (述懷自敍)) is a full-length work that records in detail Lee Jin-baek's birth, marriage, past exams and public service life, and retirement in South Taean and Seosan, where he spent the rest of his life at the age of 86. There is also a work with the same title as Byeonryemoon, and the content is similar to the 7-Eon Gosi. Looking at the preface, it was understood that the 7-Eon Gosi was created first and Byeonryemoon was created based on it.
