종교개혁자들은 교회의 활동에 실천적 관심이 많았다. 이는 시편에 드러난 고난의 문제에서 잘 볼 수 있다. 멜란히톤의 시편 주석 또한 성도의 고난과 고통의 문제를 잘 다루고 있다. 멜란히톤은 시편에서 고난 받는 교회와 보존하시는 하나님을 발견한다. 이것은 슈말칼덴 전쟁의 비극적 상황과 긴밀하게 연관된다. 이 전쟁에서 개신교 진영은 패배했다. 개신교회가 사라질 수도 있는 실제적 위기 가운데, 멜란히톤은 시편을 비텐베르크 대학에서 강의했다. 그는 이 시편 강의를 통해 고난에 대한 하나님의 메시지를 발견하고 전했다. 교회는 하나님의 소유이지만, 그렇다고 교회에 고난이 없지 않다. 오히려 교회가 당하는 현실적 고난은 상당히 크다. 멜란히톤은 시편에서 교회의 고난을 발견하고, 그 원인과 목적 또한 발견한다. 교회의 고난의 원인 중 하나는 성도의 죄이다. 그리고 이를 위해 교회가 사용하는 방어 수단은 학문과 가르침이다. 더 나아가 교회의 고난의 궁극적 원인은 하나님의 계획이다. 이를 통해 하나님은 교회가 죄를 알기를 원하셨다. 다만 고난은 교회를 없애기 위해 존재하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 회개를 위한 교훈적 목적으로 존재한다. 이런 방식으로 고난은 성도를 부르짖음과 간구로 나아가게 만든다. 그리고 하나님은 교회의 간구에 응답하신다. 그러므로 교회가 비록 큰 고난을 경험한다 하더라도 교회는 하나님을 믿고, 신뢰해야 한다. 멜란히톤은 이것이 시편이 주는 교훈이라고 말한다.

The reformers were very interested in the actual work of the church. This can be seen in the problem of suffering revealed in the psalms. Melanchthon’s Psalm commentary also deals well with the problem of suffering of the saints. Melanchthon finds the suffering church and the preserving God in the psalms. This is amid the historical background in which the Protestant camp was defeated in the Schmalkalden War. In the midst of a real crisis in which the Protestant Church could disappear, Melanchthon found and delivered God's message of suffering through the psalms. The church belongs to God, but the actual suffering that the church faces is quite great. In particular, Melanchthon finds the suffering of the church in the psalms. One of the causes is the sin of the saints. And the church’s defense measures are academics and teaching. The ultimate cause is God’s plan. God wants the church to know sin through this. Suffering does not exist to get rid of the church, but rather has a didactic meaning for repentance. Suffering leads to calling and prayer for the saints, and God responds to the church’s prayers. Even if the church experiences great suffering, it must trust God. Melanchthon says this is a lesson from the psalms.
