The Reformation is often studied in isolation from its international connections, so its multilayered aspects need to be more noticed. To understand how the Reformation was connected internationally in the 16th century, it is useful to trace the relationship between the Huguenots and the German Protestants. The internal conflicts in France in the 1560s coincided with the Empire's Protestant situation being complicated by the rise of the Palatinate reformed Reformers. Therefore, this article will examine the rise of the Reformed in the Palatinate and the connections between the Reformed within and outside the Empire in order to understand the international relations and context of German Protestantism. At the center of all this is the Elector of the Palatinate, Friedrich III. His significance lies not simply in the fact that he was a Huguenot supporter as Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, meaning that the presence of such a high-ranking supporter of the Reformation within the Empire was a real boost for the Huguenots. Friedrich III is also significant in that his embrace of the Reformed complicated German-Huguenot relations because while previously Protestantism had only referred to Lutherans, there were now two kinds of Protestants in the Empire. In order to provide a more layered understanding of the Reformation in international relations, this article focuses on the rise of the Reformed in the Palatinate, the outbreak of the Huguenot Wars and the Palatinate's involvement, and Friedrich III's support of the Huguenots.
