Universities in South Korea are undergoing significant changes in both quantitative and qualitative aspects of general education. Externally, these changes appear to stem from a decrease in number of eligible students. However beneath the surface lies a critical reflections on higher education itself. As vocational education institution, colleges are required to respond sensitively to industry changes while providing meaningful education throughout student’s lives. It is crucial to distinguish vocational education from vocational training and general education at colleges can help clarify the boundaries between them. To achieve this end, the concept of occupation must be understood as more than just a means of sustaining livelihood-it is a form of life. Viewing occupation in this light has three implications. 1) It reminds us that life and work are interconnected, not separate entities. 2) It can serve as a foundation for evaluating actions taken throughout one’s life, offering insight into the value of vocational education in South Korea. 3) understanding job as a form of life provides an opportunity to reassess the importance of work in self-realization.
