This study is an attempt to understand the nature of the recent deepening school crisis as fundamentally connected to the problems of modern society and to illuminate the innovative direction of school education by exploring the implicated meanings of Illich's idea of ‘deschooling’ for today. For this purpose, we first re-examine Illich's critical discussion about the phenomenology of the modern “schooled” society and the mythical functions of institutionalized schools, which will provide relevant insights into the essential nature of the crisis facing today's schools and society. Next, we explicate the constructive ideas regarding the contents and methods of school curriculum and the new ideal of well-educated persons underlying his alternative proposal of “learning webs”, which will be shown to be in line with the recent effective proposals for school transformation as presented in UNESCO Futures of Education report in 2021.
