Innovation Clustering of Changwon Industrial Complex

Industrial complexes comprise 71.6%, 49.2%, and 37.6% respectively of exports, production, and employment in manufacturing industries in Korea. However, most industrial complexes focus on production alone, and they are heavily dependent on the parent companies located in Seoul Metropolitan Area for R&D and corporate support. Changwon Industrial Complex, the home of the machinery industry, is one of the most successful industrial clusters in Korea but has a lot of pending issues to resolve. The aim of this study is to provide methodology for the innovation clustering of Changwon Industrial Complex. To this purpose, innovation factor analysis, innovation resources surveys, and surveys for the companies are implemented. Through this process, detailed methods for the clustering of Changwon Industrial Complex could be suggested. In addition to the organic connections between production and R&D functions, cooperation between large companies and SMEs is also emphasized. The development of regional human resources, the supply of inexpensive land for the production, and support for the globalization of companies are also important for establishing the regional innovation system.
