경제충격과 지역의 생활만족도

The 2008 Economic Crisis and Life Satisfaction in Korean Regions

경제충격은 실직, 소득감소, 이혼, 가족해체, 범죄 증가 등 여러 경로를 통해 사람들에게 고통을 안겨주고 삶의 질을 하락시키며 일부 사람들에게는 새로운 기회를 제공하기도 한다. 본 연구는 사회조사 원시자료를 사용하여 거주 지역에 따라 개인의 후생에 있어서 차이가 발생하는지를 평가하며 특히, 국민경제 전반에 큰 영향을 미쳤던 2008년의 경제위기가 지역간 후생의 격차에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였다. 회귀분석결과 경제위기 이전에는 농어촌지역 거주자의 전반적인 생활만족도가 중소도시 및 대도시 거주자에 비해 높았고 중소도시 거주자와 대도시 거주자 간에 생활만족도에 있어서 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 경제충격이 상대적으로 대도시보다는 중소도시, 중소도시보다는 농어촌 지역의 후생에 보다 더 부정적인 영향을 미쳐 도시와 농어촌지역 거주자 간의 생활만족도의 격차는 줄어들었고 대도시 거주자와 중소도시 거주자 사이에 생활만족도의 격차가 발생하였다. 권역별로 지역을 구분하는 경우 경제위기 이전에는 호남권과 강원/제주권 거주자의 생활만족도가 영남권에 비해 높았고 충청권 거주자도 영남권 거주자에 비해 생활만족도가 약간 높았으며 수도권과 영남권 거주자 간의 생활만족도에는 차이가 없었다. 경제충격은 권역별로는 상대적으로 호남권, 강원/제주권, 충청권, 영남권, 수도권 순으로 부정적인 영향이 컸던 것으로 나타나 호남권 및 강원/제주권 거주자와 영남권 거주자 사이의 생활만족도 격차는 크게 줄어들었고 충청권과 영남권 거주자 간의 격차는 사라졌으며 수도권과 영남권 거주자 간의 생활만족도 격차가 발생하였다.

Economic shocks give pains to people and decrease the quality of life through unemployment, income reduction, divorce, family disintegration, crime increase and others. However, they also provide new opportunities for some people. This paper investigates the impact of local macro variables on life satisfaction among local residents and specially, analyzes the impact of the 2008 economic crisis on regional disparities of life satisfaction using social statistics survey. The regression results show that before the economic crisis, life satisfaction of rural area residents was higher than that of metro residents and there were no life satisfaction disparities between metro and small city residents. However, the economic shock impact the most negatively on rural area and the least negatively on metro area resulting in the reduction of life satisfaction disparities between rural area residents and others and the increase of them between metro residents and small city residents. When the region was classified into 5 areas as Capital, Honam, Youngnam, Chungcheong, and Gangwon/Jeju, life satisfaction of Honam, Gangwon/Jeju, and Chungcheong residents was higher than that of Youngnam residents and there were no life satisfaction disparities between Capital residents and Youngnam residents before the economic crisis. The impact of the 2008 economic shock appears to be the highest in Honam area resulting in the largest reduction of life satisfaction disparities between Honam residents and Youngnam residents. The impact of it was lowest in Capital area resulting in the increase of life satisfaction disparities between Capital residents and Youngnam residents.
