The following article compares three approaches to George Eliot’s Silas Marner--The Linguistic Approach, The Biographical Approach and The Freudian Approach. Although each method of analysis has its distinctive merits, the conclusion of this article is that the Linguistic Approach proves to be the most beneficial means of analyzing the text. The Linguistic Approach is the best choice simply because it offers novice readers a greater opportunity to utilize and understand literary terms in the context of Eliot’s compact but enriching literary work. It offers a multitude of responses and is less constrictive in its scope than either the Biographical Approach or the Freudian Approach.
