The Effects of Diverse English Accents on Listening Comprehension

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of diverse English accents (British, Australian, New Zealander, Indian, Filipino, and American) in listening comprehension and the necessity of teaching different English accents to Korean college students. For this study, a survey of 122 junior college students and 112 airline employees was conducted. The main findings were as follows: (1) Speech rate is the most hampering factor in English listening comprehension to college students, while the English accent is the one to airline employees. (2) Different English accents affect all subjects' listening comprehension, and especially British and Indian accents make it more difficult for them to understand. (3) Proficiency level doesn't make any difference in listening comprehension with different English accents. (4) Teaching diverse English accents in school is necessary to improve students' communicative competence.
