The purpose of this study was to remind all English learners and teachers of the importance of vocabulary acquisition and give them the opportunities to think about more effective vocabulary teaching and learning methodologies. The basic view of this study was that 'lexis' can take over not only vocabulary but also sentential grammar. This paper reviewed the definition of some terms of the vocabulary acquisition field. And this study suggested that teachers and learners should discard the word lists and pay attention to collocation, phrasal verb, idioms and so on - multi-word items, which are not single words, with contextual information. In conclusion, even though this study did not have explicit results from experiments, it examined more efficient way for improving English proficiency with effective vocabulary acquisition and proposes us to recognize the importance of vocabulary and multi-word items for our English ability development.
