This study was about an alternative way to teach English language through the courses of History of American Literature based on the experiences. For this study, the literary texts and useful films were listed. Then the cultural and historical significance of the work of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath was sketched and the ways to approach it were suggested. In addition to above study, how to teach English literature in connection with the language teaching in the undergraduate programs was explored. A growing understanding of the reading process in the last decades invites us to pay more attention to good readers than critical readers at least prior to analytical studies in graduate programs. It is suggested that students' linguistic and literary experiences in the reading process be the springboard to stand on to be good readers of the literary texts. Taking into account that for most of the Korean students in undergraduate, American literature courses have a very limited ability to interpret a story plot. Films are not only very useful and play a very important role in paying attention to the stories, but also very helpful to the English language teaching. English language teaching in literature classroom, once chosen from these new approaches, will contribute in making meet students' expectations for English language learning in the classroom. Also, professors teaching English literature will have to share in common on what to teach to the English majors.
