A Syntactico-Semantic Analysis of English Aspect Device

This study aims to characterize aspect system of English through an analysis of both morphosyntax and semantics. We investigated basic properties of English aspectual system and found that English aspectual system can be defined at temporal dimension. The fact that English aspect has the property of temporal dimension enables us to syntactically represent the aspectual devices into T2 and T3. This suggestion is related with Reichenbach’s and Hornstein’s approaches which regard the perfect and progressive form of English, ‘have+p.p.’ and ‘be+~ing’ as Tense. To represent the temporal and aspectual properties of English perfect form and progressive form, we introduced T2perf and T3prog. Most of the studies on English aspect system has focused on the semantics of each form. However, this study tries to consider the syntactic representation of the aspect device itself as well. And we can find a valuable implication on the core meaning of each aspectual form.
