The Effective Teaching of English Pronunciation for Raising Communicative Competence of Primary School Students

The purpose of this study is to present some classroom techniques for teaching English pronunciation to develop communicative competence of English learners of primary school age. The six essential elements are suggested for this purpose: (1) Concepts are taught through visual images instead of through words. (2) Only the most crucial sounds are presented, leaving the rest for later study. (3) Every teaching point is designed not only to help intelligibility but also to improve listening comprehension. (4) Rhythm is taught through the visual and kinesthetic modes. (5) Immediate help with reading is provided by teaching simple spelling rules. (6) Tasks emphasize phrases, not just individual words. The opportunities to be successful in learning English pronunciation is enhanced when learners learn through various interesting activities suited to their levels such as Songs, Chants, and Rhymes, Stress Moves, Ask and Answer, Back-Chaining, Information Gap, Listening Discrimination, Phonetic Bingo, Sound Mazes, Walking/Clapping, Adding, etc. Some activities for better English pronunciation introduced in this study have been used in classrooms. Those activities will be adopted by teachers of primary school in classroom settings. To use those activities in classroom setting, however, teachers need to be aware of their teaching abilities and carefully prepare lesson plans and teaching materials. It is also recommended that teachers teach pronunciation through diverse and creative activities.
