Nominalization in Korean and English

This paper proposes a lexicalist approach to English and Korean nominalization based on HPSG. Nominalization in both languages exhibits the VP distribution internally, but the NP distribution externally. Building on Malouf, it is suggested that the English verbal gerund belongs to a mixed category of Verbal and Nominal. Likewise, Korean -um and -ki affixation does not make the resulting form have a new category different from the category of the stem, but it specifies the maximal categorial information, i.e. DN, which is a subsort of Verbal and Nominal. The proposed anallysis accounts for the mixed properties of Korean sentential nominalization while maintaining the lexicalist view: lexical integrity and endocentricity of head projection.
