This study examines various linguistic hierarchies and their characteristics and then suggests that the hierarchy concept within language can be substantively exploited for developing comprehensive linguistic theories. Section 1 examines the characteristics and roles of the hierarchies proposed in the previous literatures. Section 2 argues that the inapplicability of the hierarchy concept in linguistic theory derives from the extreme rigidity of the grammatical constraints. Section 3 suggests a violable hierarchy concept in linguistic theory in order to deal with the inapplicability problem due to the inviolability of constraints.
