영어 시제와 相의 교수 - 학습에 관한 제언

Proposals for Teaching and Learning English Tense and Aspect

This paper aims to make some suggestions for teaching and learning English tense and aspect. The results from previous studies on the acquisition of English tense and aspect indicate that the elements similar to EFL(English as a Foreign Language) learners’ L1(first language) decrease difficulties in learning L2(second language), but the elements different from learners’ L1 increase difficulties. That is, EFL learners’ L1 has an influence on the acquisition of English tense and aspect. Therefore, the consideration of EFL learners’ L1 is needed in teaching English tense and aspect. According to Ausubel(1963), new ideas can be usefully learned and retained only to the extent that they can be related to already available concepts or propositions. So, if the twelve-tense system in English is taught and learned in class as usual, it will conflict too strongly with the Korean tense system which is composed of two tenses and may not be effectively retained. Accordingly, it is proposed to reclassify the twelve-tense system in English into two-tense system: present and past, excluding the perfect and progressive aspects, and to make a teaching model which considers Korean learners’ L1.
