There are many studies which indicate that understanding constructions is essential to reading comprehension. A questionnaire has shown that Korean learners have difficulty in understanding English constructions and a test in reading comprehension has proved that they make many errors for lack of syntactic knowledge. Therefore the purpose of the present study is to suggest an effective way of teaching English constructions, which enables Korean learners to read and understand English texts correctly and fast. It is difficult for Korean learners to understand the meaning of the sentence they are reading immediately because they understand it after rearranging the words according to the Korean word order. Since the English word order has grammatical function, it plays an important part. Therefore it is proposed that English constructions should be taught on the basis of word order so that Korean learners can recognize and understand them on the basis of the arrangement of words.
