본 논문은 붇다(Buddha)의 마지막 유행과 입멸을 담고 있는 마하빠리닙바나-숫따(Mahāparinibbāna-sutta) 에 나오는 어휘, ‘vegha-missakena’를 대상으로 ‘vegha’가 ‘끈’을 뜻한다는 그간의 어원적 연구성과에 상징분석을 더하여 ‘끈(vegha)의 함의’를 살피고자 한다. 먼저, ‘끈’의 일반적인 상징형식과 빠알리문헌들에 나타난 ‘끈’의 전반적인 상징형식을 검토하여, ‘끈’이 부정적이거나 긍정적인 맥락 모두와 연관되는 양가성과 수동이나 능동의 양태로 나타나는 양면성이 있음을 확인한다. 그리고 이 ‘끈’의 상징성이 결박과 결합의 이미지로 구체화되고 있는 측면을 확인하여, 이 이미지들이 붇다의 세계관이나 주요사상들을 관류(灌流)하며, 이들 간의 네트워크에 기여하고 있다는 점을 제시한다. 제시한 측면들과 마하빠리닙바나-숫따 에서 ‘끈’의 상징이 활용된 전 후문맥에 기반하여, 이 ‘끈’이 결박과 결합의 이미지를 중첩적으로 함축하고있음을 제시한다. 나아가 ‘결박의 끈’이 존재의 조건과 섭리로서의 자연법칙적 담마를, ‘결합의 끈’이 수행자의 이상적인 존재양식에 대한 붇다의 가르침으로서의 담마(Dhamma)를 상징하고 있음을 보인다. 덧붙여, 언표되지는 않았지만 ‘vegha-missakena’가 나오는 전 후 문맥가운데에 작용하고 있는 ‘끈’의 이미지가 불교내의 두 경향인, 지혜의 증득으로 해탈에 도달하려는 흐름과 선정에의 집중으로 해탈에 도달하려는 흐름이 드러내는 갈등 내지 경쟁을 조화롭게 결합하려는 의도를 함축하고 있음을 언급한다

This paper focuses on the vegha-missakena in the Mahāparinibbāna-sutta to elucidate its implications. To this end, the etymological findings that vegha can be translated as string is combined with the methods of symbolic analysis to reveal the meaning of string. First, review the general symbolism of string and the overall symbolism of string in Pali texts. Through this review, it is shown that string have ambivalence, being associated with both negative and positive contexts, and can be passive or active, and aspects of this property of string is presented as images of saṁyojana and bonding. Furthermore, by identifying the ways in which the image of string as saṁyojana and bonding runs through the Buddha's worldview and major ideas, and contributes to the network of interrelationships between them, and examine the relevance of these aspects to the use of string in the Mahāparinibbāna Sūtta. Based on the discussion, it is concluded that the string in the Mahāparinibbāna-sūtta has a dual structure with the images of saṁyojana and bonding superimposed, and that the string of saṁyojana symbolizes the natural law dhamma as a condition of existence and the string of bonding symbolizes the Dhamma as the Buddha's teaching on the ideal way of being for the disciplinant. In addition, the context between the sentence in which vegha-missakena occurs and the sentence that follows discusses the image of a string that is unstated but at work. This string is a reference to the conflict or competition between two tendencies within Buddhism: the tendency to attain vimokkha through the acquisition of paññā and the tendency to attain vimokkha through the concentration on jhāna, but it also implies an intention to combine these competing tendencies in harmony
