한국인이 쓴 첫 기독교 변증서 『파혹진션론』(破惑進善論, 1897)에 대한 고찰

A Study on the First Christian Apologetic Book Written by a Korean, Introduction to Christianity (『파혹진션론』, 1897)

한국에 온 초기 선교사들은 개인 구원과 교회를 세우는 일을 중점적 사역으로 생각하고 매진했다. 그러한 목적을 성취하기 위해 그들이 적극적으로 활용했던 사역 방식중 하나는 기독교 교리 입문서나 복음 전도 책자들을 간행하여 배포하는 일이었다. 개화 초기에 출간된 그러한 종류의 문서들은 70종이 넘는데, 그 가운데 우리의 눈에 뜨이는 것은 1897년에 출간된 『파혹진션론』(Introduction to Christianity)인데, 그 이유는 한국인이 쓴 최초의 기독교 입문서 또는 변증서이기 때문이다. 그러나 학계의 논의 현황을 살펴보면, 역사적으로 중요한 이 문서에 대한 논의가 희소하다는 것을 발견하게 된다. 따라서 본고에서는 노병선의 『파혹진션론』의 내용을 소상하게 살펴보고, 개혁주의적 관점에서 평가하는 일을 수행했다. 이러한 논의에 앞서 저자의 생애와 시대적 배경에 대해서 2절에서 재구성해 봄으로, 본서의 배경이해를 도모하였다. 그리고 이어지는 3절에서는 『파혹진션론』의 내용을 상세하게 고찰해 보고 난 후에 평가 작업도 덧붙혔다. 이러한 연구를 통해 우리는 한국인이 쓴 최초의 기독교 변증서라는 칭호가 틀리지 않았지만, 보다 더 전문적인 변증학의 발전은 후일(1920년대)에야 발견할 수밖에 없다는 점도 확인하게 되었다.

The early missionaries who came to Korea focused on individual salvation and building churches as their primary ministries. One of the ministry methods they actively utilized to achieve that goal was publishing and distributing introduction to Christian doctrines and evangelism booklets. There are more than 70 sorts of documents of this type published in the early period of the Korean mission, and the one that stands out among them is Introduction to Christianity(『파혹진션론』) published in 1897, because it is the first introduction to Christianity written by a Korean. Because it is an apologetic book. However, if we look at the status of academic discussions, we find that there is little discussion about this historically important document. Therefore, in this paper, we looked in detail at the contents of Noh Byeong-seon’s Introduction to Christianity(『파혹진션론』) and evaluated it from a reformed perspective. Prior to this discussion, the author's life and historical background were reconstructed in Section 2 to help understand the background of Noh’s booklet. And in the following section 3, after examining the contents of Introduction to Christianity(『파혹진션론』) in detail, some evaluative remarks was also added. Through this examination, we have confirmed that the title of the first Christian apologetic written by a Korean is correct, but that the development of more specialized apologetics was only developed later (in the 1920s).
