개혁주의 목회적 돌봄과 의례의 관점에서 본 극단적 선택에 의한 죽음의 예식

The Rite of Death(Suicide) from the Perspective of Reformed Pastoral Care and Ritual

기독교 신앙에서 죽음은 단지 삶의 종결을 넘어서서 삶의 불가피한 한 부분이다. 목회 사역은 죽은 자에 대한 현실적 돌봄과 죽은 자의 가족과 동료들에 대한 목회적 지원과 돌봄을 신중하고 의도적으로 감당해야 한다. 이 글은 극단적 선택에 의한 죽음에 직면한 유가족들의 슬픔과 상실을 목회적으로 돌보기 위한 과제 가운데 장례 예식의 구성과 방식에 대한 원리와 실천 지침을 제시한다. 죽음과 관련한 목회적 돌봄의 과제 수행은 의례를 요구한다. 죽어 가는 자를 향한 의례, 죽은 자와 관련한 의례, 그리고 죽음을 슬퍼하는 자들을 위한 의례와 같은 구체적이고 세부적인 접근을 요구한다. 그런데, 죽음과 관련한 의례의 목회적 접근에서 현실적으로 주어지는 과제는 죽음의 유형과 관련한다. 죽음과 관련한 목회적 돌봄으로서 예식을 진행할 때 가장 곤혹스러운 경우 가운데 하나는 극단적 선택에 의한 죽음의 경우이다. 극단적 선택으로 죽음에 직면한 성도를 직면하고, 그 죽음을 받아들여야 하는 가족과 동료들 그리고 공동체를 목회적으로 돌보는 예식 진행과 절차는 어려운 과제이다. 우선, 극단적 선택에 의한 죽음과 관련한 목회적 돌봄은 장례의 과정에서 죽음의 이유에 대한 신학적 판단을 제시하거나 평가하는 것보다 죽음에 따른 유가족들의 갑작스러운 상실과 슬픔을 위로하는 일에 집중하는 것이 더욱 중요하고 우선적인 과제가 된다. 아울러, 극단적 선택에 의한 죽음의 경우에도 죽음 자체에 대한 목회적 접근으로 진행하는 입관, 발인, 하관 예식 등에 대한 기본 절차와 방식을 따르는 것에는 큰 차이가 없다. 마지막으로, 장례 예식의 진행에서 하나님과 슬픔의 자리를 연결하고 죽음과 생명에 대한 하나님의 주권을 선언하고 선포하는 예배와 복음의 측면을 강화하는 것이 중요한 과제가 된다.

In the Christian faith, death is more than just the end of life as an inevitable part of life. Pastoral ministry must be careful and intentional in its practical care for the dead and relevant support for the deceased’s family and colleagues. This article attempts to present principles and guidelines for the composition and method of funeral services in the context of pastoral care for the grief and loss of families facing death by extreme choice (suicide). The fulfillment of the task of pastoral care calls for a specific and detailed approach, such as a ritual for the dying, a rite for the dead, and a rite for those who mourn the death. However, the practical task of the pastoral approach to the ritual of death is related to the type of death. One of the most perplexing cases of conducting a ritual as a pastoral care for death is that of death by extreme choice. The conduct and procedure of the rite and process of confronting a believer who faces death with extreme choices, and pastoral care for the family, colleagues, and community who must accept that death, is a difficult task. First of all, pastoral care in relation to the case of suicide becomes a more important and priority task to focus on comforting the bereaved family for the sudden loss and grief of death rather than on presenting or evaluating theological judgments about the reasons for death in the funeral process. In addition, even in the case of death by extreme choice, there is not much difference in following the basic procedures and methods of funeral rites, which proceed with a pastoral approach to death itself. Finally, it is important to reinforce the aspect of worship and the gospel that connects the place of sorrow with God in the conduct of the funeral rite and declares and proclaims God’s sovereignty over death and life.
