Shared Decision Making in Geriatric Care

This paper aims to introduce the background and concept of shared decision-making, review the development and current status of shared decision-making, and suggest considerations for its application in geriatric practice. As the value of patient-centered care has been emphasized, shared decision-making has emerged as a decision-making method to implement it. The initial concept of shared decision-making was rooted in ethical discussions about respect for patient autonomy and physician obligations, which could be expanded with policy support. In addition, shared decision-making models have been developed, and advances in technology have enabled the development of shared decision-making tools and online platforms. In order for shared decision-making for elderly patients to be well established in Korea, it is necessary for healthcare providers to understand and empathize with the vulnerability of elderly patients, and for the shared decision-making models to specifically reflect the role of families as supporters of patients.
