This research aims to scrutinize the rhetorical functions exhibited by citations within Korean research articles. To achieve this objective, a corpus of 762 citations from 20 research articles in Korean language education was meticulously examined. The analysis focused on the manifestations of these citations in the structural framework of the articles and their rhetorical functions, employing a synergistic approach of quantitative and qualitative content analysis. The investigation delineated 13 distinct rhetorical functions of citations in academic discourse, encompassing: reporting on prior research; articulating or buttressing arguments; elucidating key concepts; categorizing and discerning trends in prior research; broaching issues or underscoring research exigencies; accentuating the cogency of research design; detailing prior research; juxtaposing current findings with preceding results; delineating divergences from prior research; explicitly appraising prior research; instigating interpretations or dialogues on prior research; applying prior research; and furnishing supplementary reference data. The discourse analyzed each function relative to its structural position, supplemented by exemplars from extant research articles. The conclusions drawn underscore the significance of comprehending the structural positioning of citations, particularly their rhetorical functions, as a pivotal guide for Korean learners in the strategic utilization of citations. This study’s outcomes not only furnish a valuable framework for Korean learners engaged in academic writing but also promise to enrich the broader discourse on scholarly communication.
