In order to resolve the rice excess supply problem in Korea the government promotes adopting a newly developed floury rice variety which is more suitable for processed rice foods. Despite the conversion subsidy being provided by the government, producers are very much concerned about the uncertainties of the new variety in terms of productivity and future price. We conducted a dichotomous-choice format survey with 200 respondents and derived their willingness to adopt prices. Although the additional price that they asked for the new variety to be adopted was high on average, there was a substantial variation in adopting prices across producers. The producers better-informed about the rice technology, rice market situation, and the advantages of the new variety were willing to adopt the new variety if the price differential can compensate for the projected productivity differential. We found that the mass media and the informal networks in rural communities, as well as the public research and extension authorities, are very effective sources of information that can enhance the adoption rate.
