The Topical Extension Method of Don'O Kim's Novel

월남 실향민 출신의 재호주 한인소설가 돈오 김은 그간 비한국적 소재의 전작 3작품 에서 은폐시켜 왔던 자신의 생득적 정체성을 한국적 소재의 『태극』을 통해 노골화시키며 소설적 소재를 확장하고 있다. 이에 그의 소재 확장방식에 주목하고자 한다. 베트남 소년 ‘티안’이 맞닥뜨린 월남전의 현장을 통해 인간의 존엄성을 역설적으로 드 러내 보이는『내 이름은 티안』은 월남내부 계층간의 이데올로기 대립전인 동시에 월남민 중의 반외세 투쟁이며 아시아에서의 미국 패권주의의 산물인 월남전의 입체적 실상을 인 도주의적 시각에서 냉철히 조명하고 있다. 평화적 이상주의자 ‘미스터 노’(중국인)의 현실적 좌절을 통해 약육강식의 제국주의 이 데올로기를 비판하는『암호』는 열강의 이해관계 얽힌 각축 속에 자신의 운명을 결정할 수 밖에 없는 아시아 약소국가의 비애를 입체적이고 객관적인 시선으로 조명하고 있다. 백호주의 대륙에 정착하려는 일본인 청년 ‘죠오’의 인종적 핍박을 통해 유색인종의 고 뇌를 부각하는『차이나맨』에는 호주사회에서 유색 이방인으로 살아가면서 은닉되어 왔던 작가 돈오 김의 내면적 자아가 조심스럽게 고개를 들고 있다. 『태극』은 그간의 창작전략을 수정해 한국인 주인공을 내세워 한국민족의 가장 본질적 테마(남북통일)를 다룬 회심작이다. 이 작품에서 작가는 서구 강대국의 횡포를 고발하는 작가적 기조를 계승하는 한편, 작가 자신의 분신인 ‘고’와 그 주변인물들을 통해 남북통일을 정략적으로 이용하는 한국 정치인들의 민낯을 과감히 비판함으로써 비로소 작가적 정체성을 온전히 드러낸다.

In order to visually examine the novel world of Don'o Kim (1936-2013), a Korean-Australian novelist, this paper aims to pay attention to his creative factor and the method of expanding the topic related thereto. Don Oh-Kim, a defect from North Korean person, is expanding his novel material by explicitly revealing his inborn identity, which has been concealed in his three previous works of non-Korean materials, through “The Grand Circle” “My Name is Tian,” which paradoxically reveals human dignity through the scene of the Vietnam War faced by the Vietnamese boy ‘Tian’, is an ideological confrontation between the Vietnamese internal class, check into Vietnamese War which is an anti-foreign struggle of Vietnamese people and a product of American hegemony in Asia. “Password”, which criticizes the imperial ideology of “a weak meat diet” through the realistic frustration of the peaceful idealist “Mr. No” (Chinese), sheds light on the sorrow of Asian weak countries that have no choice but to decide their fate amid the interests of the powers. In “The China Man,” which highlights the anguish of people of color through the racial persecution of “Joe,” a Japanese young man who wants to settle on continent of ‘the White Australiasm’, the inner self of writer Don'O Kim, who has been hidden while living as a colored stranger in Australian society, carefully raiseshis head. “The Grand Circle” deals with the most essential theme of theKorean people (North-South unification) by revising the creativestrategy of Don'O Kim, who has been enhancing his author'sinfluence through the “universal theme” wrapped in English, anobjective means of delivery. In this work, the artist inherits theauthor's existing stance of accusing the tyranny of Westernpowers, while boldly criticizing the bare face of Korean politicians who use inter-Korean unification politically through the artist's alter ego “Go” and its surrounding figures. This suggests a series of success models in which non-Westernwriters settle in Western literary world.
