Types and Meanings of Village Rituals around Chiak-Mountain

현대사회에서 신앙 형성기에 인간들이 지녔던 세계관들은 ‘미신(迷信)’이라는 언어로 그 가치를 상실하였으며, 전통사회의 유지 차원에서 마을 단위로 이루어지던 마을제의가 점차 사라지고 있다. 이는 치악산 주변만이 아닌, 우리나라의 전반적인 현황이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 입장에서 강원도 원주시, 횡성군, 영월군 일대에 자리한 치악산 주변에서 근래까지 있었고, 현재도 남아 전승하는 마을제의의 유형과 특징들을 정리해 보고자 하 였다. 이를 통해 치악산 주변 마을 주민들의 신앙 형태를 일부 살펴보고자 하는 데 주된 목적이 있다. 치악산을 중심으로 국가 및 마을 단위로 이루어진 제의들이 있었다. 산신제, 서낭제, 천제, 입춘제, 대왕제 등 다양한 유형의 제의가 확인된다. 특히 치악산 주변 마을제의의 중심은 ‘산신제’와 ‘서낭제’라고 볼 수 있다. 치악산 주변 마을의 생활 터전은 ‘산’이다. 산은 전통적으로 그 자체로 신성하지만, 신의 처소인 ‘우주’ 또는 ‘하늘’과 통하는 통로이기도 하다. 그리고 산이 지니는 가변적인 특성으로 치악산 주변 일대 주민들은 의지의 대상이 필요하고, 그 중심에 ‘산신(山神)’과 ‘서낭신’ 등이 있는 것이다.

In modern society, the worldviews held by humans during the formation of faith have lost their value in the language of ‘superstition’. In order to maintain the traditional society, the village rituals, which were conducted in village units, are gradually disappearing. It can be said that it is not just the area around Chiak-Mountain, but the overall situation of Korea. From this point of view, I tried to organize the types and characteristics of village rituals in Wonju-si, Hoengseong-gun, and Yeongwol-gun in Gangwon-do, which are areas around Chiak-Mountain. There were rituals made at the national and village level centered on Chiak- Mountain. The livelihood of villages around Chiak-Mountain is ‘mountain’. Mountains are traditionally sacred in themselves, but they are also passages leading to the 'universe' or 'sky', the dwelling places of gods. Mountains have variable characteristics. Therefore, living near Chiak-Mountain Residents needed an object of will.
