동아일보 사회부장 시절 일장기 말살사건으로 구속된 전력에서 알 수 있는 바와 같이 현진건은 식민지 현실의 구조적 모순을 직시하고 웅혼한 지사적 기백을 견지했던 사실주의 작가이다. 본고는 ‘조선혼’으로 대변되는 현진건의 사상적 원류가 구체적으로 포착되는 그의 기행수필 고찰을 통해 현진건 문학의 정신적 기반을 천착해 보고자 한다. ｢고도 순례 - 경주｣에는 천년 고도, 경주를 주유한 소회가 고스란히 담겨 있다. 경주박물관을 시작으로, 포석정, 첨성대, 안압지 등 여러 유적지와 불국사, 석굴암에 이르기까지 문자 그대로 경주 일원의 역사적 흔적을 샅샅이 훑고 있는 이 글엔 여행지의 문물과 풍광에 기계적으로 접안해 즉믈적 감상을 읊조리는 여느 기행문들과는 달리 여행지의 서경적 감흥을 서정적으로 갈무리해 ‘조선혼’의 근원을 탐색하려는 작가의 생득적 기질이 절절히 드러난다. 그리하여 피식민자로서의 상고적(尙古)적 정체성과 문화적 자존심만은 결코 방기하지 않겠다는 결연한 의지를 곳곳에 내비친다. ｢단군 성적 순례｣는 현진건의 웅혼한 지사적 기백이 더욱 노골적으로 드러난 기행수필로서 30년대 대중 역사소설의 범람 속에서도 역사적 과거의 현재적 의의를 꿋꿋하게 추구한 현진건 역사소설의 정신적 밑거름이 되었던 작품이다. 민족의 성지인 단군유적지들의 빼어난 운치를 雄渾한 민족혼에 담아 도도히 그려내고 있는 이 글엔 단순한 풍광의 음미나 서경적 수사를 초월해, 유려한 자연에 의탁한 숙명적 역사의식이 숨쉬고 있다. 단순히 山河의 피상적 접안에 그치지 않는, 露骨的일 정도의 민족적 정체성을 과감히 드러냄으로써 투철한 역사의식에서 기인한 심오한 고뇌의 일단을 엿보게 한다. ｢금강산 정조｣는 樹州 변영로에게 보내는 서간체 형식을 띤 기행수필로서 풍광이 수려하기로 이름난 금강산의 외형적 풍모를 살피는 와중에 포착된 조선인 자신의 민낯을 통해 우리 민족의 분발과 자성을 촉구하는 어조를 취한다. 금강산 유산에서 얻은 서경적 감동의 배면에서 꿈틀거리는 ‘조선혼의 상실과 훼손’이란 정신적 지표를 적확히 적출해냄으로써 여행지에서 체득한 인정세태를 식민지 지식인의 주체적 역사의식에 접목시키고 있다. 이처럼 현진건의 기행수필엔 여행지의 변별적 감흥을 ‘조선혼에의 갈구’로 환유시키는 작가적 의지가 강렬히 녹아 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

This paper aims to explore the spiritual foundation of Hyun Jin-gun's literature through his travel essay review, where the ideological origin of Hyun Jin-gun, represented by the “Chosun Spirit” is specifically captured. Pilgrimage in Ancient City - Gyungju contains the thoughts of strolling the thousand-year-old city, Gyungju. Starting with the Gyeongju Museum, this essay examines various historical sites such as Poseokjeong, Cheomseongdae, and Anapji, as well as historical traces of Gyeongju from Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Hermitage. Unlike other travel texts that mechanically approach the culture and scenery of travel destinations and recite spectacular impressions, this article lyrically grasps the lyrical inspiration of travel destinations, revealing the artist's native temperament to explore the source of the “Chosun Spirit”. Thus, the determination to never abandon only the ancient identity and cultural pride as a colonist is expressed everywhere. Pilgrimage in Dangun’s Ruins is a travel essay in which Hyun Jin-gun's spiritual spirit was more explicitly revealed, and Hyun Jin-gun, who firmly pursued the present significance of the historical past despite the flood of popular historical novels in the 30s, used this essay as the mental foundation for his historical novels. This article, which proudly depicts the outstanding scenery of the Dangun ruins, the holy place of the nation, in a national spirit, breathes a sense of fate and history entrusted to the elegant nature, transcending the simple taste of the scenery or praise for the scenery. By boldly revealing the blatant national identity, not just the superficial interface between mountains and rivers, one can get a glimpse of the profound agony caused by a thorough historical consciousness. A Sentiment in Geumgangsan Mountain is a travel essay in the form of a calligraphy to Byun Young-ro, the state, and takes a tone that urges the Korean people's efforts and self-reflection through his own bare face captured while examining the appearance of Geumgangsan Mountain, which is famous for its beautiful scenery. By accurately extracting the spiritual indicator of “loss and damage of Chosun spirit” wriggling from the back of the scenery impression obtained from the Geumgangsan heritage, the artist is incorporating the recognition he learned from the travel destination into the colonial intellectual's subjective historical consciousness. As such, it was confirmed that Hyun Jin-gun's travel essay strongly incorporates the artist's will to convert the discriminatory impression of the travel destination into a desire to the “Chosun Spirit”.
