The Analysis of Effects of GRDP and Trade on Energy Consumption in South Korea’s Metropolitan Cities and Provinces

Purpose - This study aims to analyze the impact of gross regional domestic product (GRDP) and trade on the energy consumption of 16 metropolitan cities and provinces in Korea from 2007 to 2020. Design/Methodology/Approach - This study was based on panel data for each metropolitan city and province, and it investigated the impact on energy consumption through a panel analysis model, panel threshold regression model, and seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) model. Findings - The increase in GRDP served as a factor in increasing energy consumption in the region, and when considering exports, the increase in GRDP led to an increase in energy consumption. Also, above the trade threshold, the increase in energy consumption responded sensitively to the increase in trade, and the impact on energy consumption varied depending on regional GRDP and the increase in trade. Research Implications - Depending on regional characteristics, the impact of GRDP and trade on energy consumption is somewhat mixed, so energy consumption policies according to regional characteristics are needed. In addition, regional energy consumption tends to increase as trade increases. Considering the proportion of trade in our economy, additional policies, such as improving the efficiency of the production process and expanding the use of eco-friendly energy, are required in the future.
