아세안 국가들은 전통적으로 일본 제조업체들의 생산기지 역할을 해왔으나 2000년대 초 중국이 부상함에 따라 일본 업체들의 진출이 더디었다. 그러나 2010년대 이후 일-중 간의 갈등, 미-중 간의 갈등으로 아세안 지역이 대체 지역 으로 주목받아왔다. 본 논문은 이러한 일본 해외직접투자의 변화 속에서 일본 제조업의 해외직접투자가 대상 국가들과 일본 간의 무역에 어떠한 영향을 미치 는지 12개의 제조업 분야별로 나누어 분석하였다. 분석 대상은 2007년부터 2019년까지의 아세안 주요 5개국(말레이시아, 인도네시아, 태국, 베트남, 필리 핀)에 대한 제조업 전 분야의 해외직접투자액이며, 중력방정식을 사용해 추정 하도록 한다. 중력방정식의 주요 변수인 거리변수를 누락시킬 수 없어 임의효 과모형을 사용하여 추정한 결과는 다음과 같다. 일본의 주요 제조업 분야인 운 송기기, 전자기기, 화학 및 제약산업 분야에서는 일본의 해외직접투자가 ASEAN5 국가들과의 무역에 정(+)의 상관관계를 가졌지만 이외의 분야에서는 유의미한 결과가 도출되지 않았다. 또한 운송기기, 화학 및 제약산업 분야에서 는 수출보다 수입효과가 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 일본 정부가 2020년부터 동남 아 지역으로 생산거점을 이전하는 제조업 기업들에게 보조금을 지급하고 있는 만큼 앞으로 해당 국가들과 일본 간의 무역량 역시 증가할 것으로 기대된다.

However, since the 2010s, amid tensions between Japan and China, as well as between the US and China, the ASEAN region has gained attention as an alternative destination. The paper analyzes the impact of changes in Japanese FDI in the manufacturing sector on trade between Japan and target countries. The analysis focuses on FDI in all 12 sectors of manufacturing in the five major ASEAN countries from 2007 to 2019 and estimates using gravity equations. Given the importance of distance variables in gravity equations, a random effects model is used for estimation. The results indicate that Japanese FDI in the transportation equipment, electronic equipment, and chemical and pharmaceutical industries had a positive correlation with trade with ASEAN5 countries, but no significant results were found in other sectors. Moreover, in transportation equipment and chemical and pharmaceutical industries, the import effect was greater than the export effect. With the Japanese government providing subsidies to manufacturing companies relocating production hubs to ASEAN from 2020 onwards, an increase in trade volume between these countries and Japan is expected in the future.
