태안 가의도 입도 주민과 지명 고찰

A Study on Geographical Name and Sea Distress in the Waters of Gaui-do(賈誼島) in Taean(泰安)

본고에서는 현존 역사 문헌을 통해 충남 태안에 소재한 가의도의 입도 주민과 지명에 관해 고찰하는 데에 중점을 두었다. 현존 문헌상 가의도를 표기한 지명은 加外島, 賈誼島, 佳宜島, 加意島 등 4종이 보인다. 加外島는 조선 중기에 처음 등장한 이래 영조 때까지 계속 사용되었다. 賈誼島는 영조 때 처음 등장한 이후 광무 초까지 널리 사용되었고, 그리고 일제강점기 이후 다시 등장하여 오늘날까지 공식 지명으로 사용되고 있다. 佳宜島는 가의도가 광무 연간부터 1914년까지 오천군에 편입된 시기에 사용되었다. 加意島는 賈誼島의 오기이다. 가의도 지명 유래에 관해 한나라 충신 賈誼가 가의도에 들어왔다며 예로부터 전해온 가의 관련설과 가의도가 신진도에서 바라볼 때 서쪽 가에 있다며 최근 제기된 신진도 가장자리설이 있다. 하지만 두 가지 설은 모두 문제점이 있다. 史書에 기술된 가의의 행적을 보면 가의가 가의도에 들어오지 않았음이 분명하다. 신진도 서쪽 바다에는 가의도 외에 다른 여러 도서가 존재하고 있기에 가장자리라는 본의와 부합되지 않는다. 이에 대해 필자는 또 하나의 가설을 제시한다. 정조 때 가의도에 가씨들이 살았던 전설과 오늘날 가의도 주민들 사이에 중국인 무덤이 가씨 분묘라는 전설이 전해온다. 가의도와 지근거리에 소재한 태안 지역에는 토박이 성씨인 소주 가씨가 있다. 소주 가씨는 중국에서 들어온 집안이다. 가씨 집안이 동족인 한나라 충신 가의를 추앙하기 위해 섬 이름을 가의도라고 명명했을 가능성을 고려해 볼 필요가 있다.

In this paper, through the examination of historical documents related to Gaui-do in Taean, Chungcheongnam-do(忠淸南道), the focus was on the examination of the geographical name and origin of Gaui-do and the ship accident in the waters of Gaui-do. In existing literature, there are four types of place names that indicate Gaui-do: Gaoe-do(加外島), Gaui-do(賈誼島), Gaui-do(佳宜島), and Gaui-do (加意島). Gaoe-do(加外島) first appeared in the middle period of the Joseon Dynasty and continued to be used until the reign of King Yeongjo. Gaui-do (賈誼島) first appeared during the reign of King Yeongjo and was widely used until the beginning of King Gwangmu, and then reappeared after the Japanese colonial period and is used as an official place name to this day. Gaui-do(佳宜島) was used from the reign of King Gwangmu to 1914 when it was incorporated into Ocheon-gun. Gaui-do(加意島) is a misspelling of Gaui-do(賈誼島). Regarding the origin of the place name of Gaui-do, there are a Gaui-related story that Gaui(Jiayi; 賈誼), a loyalist of the Han(漢) Dynasty in China entered Gaui-do, and a Shinjin-do’s edge story that Gaui-do is on the west-side edge when viewed from Shinjin-do. However, when looking at the history of Gaui described in the historical records, Gaui did not enter Gaui-do, and there are several other islands besides Gaui-do in the western sea of Shinjin-do, which does not match the real intention of the edge.
