조선시대 한중 표류 연구의 동향과 과제

Research on the Drift between Korea and China during the Joseon Period: Trends and Issues

이 논문은 조선시대 한중 표류 사건에 대한 연구 동향과 그 문제점, 그리고 향후 과제를 살펴보았다. 한중 표류 사건은 주로 동아시아 해역에서 일어났던 표류 사건의 일부분이나 한중관계사의 일환으로서 주목받게 되었고, 관련 연구는 주로 한·중·일 3국에서 진행되었다. 일본 학계에 의해 제시된 ‘표류민송환체제’론은 거의 표류연구의 範式이 될 정도로 지금까지 일본 국내외의 표류 연구자에게 영향을 미치고 있는 반면에, 한국과 중국은 일본 연구 성과의 영향을 받아 표류에 관한 다양한 주제를 다루면서 자국을 중심으로 이루어진 海上 네트워크를 복원 및 재현하는 데 힘쓰고 있다. 이러한 연구 진전에 대해 3가지 문제점을 지적할 수 있다. 첫째, 한중 표류 연구에 ‘송환체제’론을 그대로 적용시키는 것이 어렵다. 둘째, ‘개별 사건의 송환 처리’에만 주목하거나 연구대상이 청 표류민에 편중되는 경향에 대해 유의할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 자료를 활용하기 전에 해당 자료의 성격과 적용 범위에 대한 검토가 부족하고, 아직 제대로 활용되지 못한 자료도 종종 있다. 이러한 문제점들을 극복하기 위해서는 표류라는 개념에 대한 역사적 定義를 제대로 내리면서 자료의 수집과 재정리, 연구방법론적인 전환 그리고 공동연구의 추진이 요구된다.

This paper examines the trends, issues and future challenges of research on the drift between Korea and China during the Joseon Period. The drift between Korea and China has been mainly recognized as a part of the shipwreck cases in East Asia seas or as part of Sino-Korean relations, and related studies have been conducted mainly in Korea, China and Japan. The ‘repatriation system’ theory proposed by Japanese academics has almost become a template for research on shipwreck and has influenced researchers in Japan and abroad, while Korean and Chinese academics have been working to restore and recreate the maritime networks centered in there own countries under the influence of the ‘repatriation system’ theory. Three problems can be pointed out regarding these research developments. First, it is difficult to apply the ‘repatriation system’ theory to the study of drift between Korea and China. Second, it is necessary to pay attention to the tendency to only focus on the repatriation of individual cases or to the tendency that the subject of the study is concentrated on the castaways of Qing Dynasty. Third, there is often a lack of examination of the nature and scope of the data, and some data have not yet been properly utilized. To overcome these problems, it is necessary to collect and rearrange data, convert research methodologies, and promote collaborative research while properly defining principles for historical concepts such as pyoryu(漂流).
