Female Diaspora and Shamanic Performance: A feminist reading on Jane Jin Kaisen's Community of Parting

본 연구는 제인 진 카인(Jane Jin Kaisen, b.1980)의 <이별의 공동체>(2019)가 작품의 핵심 모티브로 삼고 있는 민간 설화 ‘바리데기’의 샤먼적 수행성을 페미니즘의 관점으로 독해하고자 한다. 카이젠은 해외입양이라는 경험으로부터 출발해 한국 근현대사에서 배제된 디아스포라 여성들에게 목소리를 부여하는 작업을 꾸준하게 전개해 온 덴마크 출신의 시각예술가이다. <이별의 공동체>는 구한말에서 일제강점기를 거쳐 제주4.3과 한국전쟁, 분단과 냉전, 산업화와 세계화에 이르는 한국의 근현대사를 그 과정에서 탈각된 여성 디아스포라의 관점에서 대항적 역사쓰기를 시도하는 중요한 작품이다. 본 연구는 <이별의 공동체>가 가부장적이고 위계적인 근대성과 맞서기 위해 제시하는 ‘바리데기’ 신화와 굿이라는 샤먼적 수행을 중심으로 디아스포라 여성들의 억압된 기억이 어떻게 저항기억으로 변화될 수 있는지 살펴보고자 한다. 남성적인 방식의 기억과 애도가 추념사와 기념식으로 대표된다면, 카이젠은 전근대적인 여성의 종교라고 할 수 있는 굿 의례를 통해 남성적인 경계들을 해체하고 일시적이고 유동적이지만 서로의 슬픔으로 상호 감응하는 새로운 공동체를 제시한다. 본 연구는 페미니즘적 독해를 통해 이러한 여성적 애도와 타자성의 윤리학이 지니는 의미와 저항성을 제시해 보고자 한다.

This paper aims to propose a feminist reading on the shamanic performativity of the folk tales of ‘princess Bari,’ which Jane Jin Kaisen(b.1980)’s film Community of Parting(2019) use as a central motif. Kaisen is a Danish visual artist who has consistently developed a body of work that draws from her own experience of transnational adoption and consistently gives voice to Korean women who have been excluded from historical memory. Community of Parting is an important work that attempts to write a counter-history of Korea's modern history, from the Japanese occupation, Jeju 4.3, the Korean War and division, the Cold War, industrialization and globalization, through the perspective of the female diaspora who were abandoned in those histories. This paper examines how diasporic women's repressed memories can be transformed into resistance activity by focusing on the myth of 'Bari' and the shamanic practice, which Community of Parting presents to confront patriarchal and hierarchical modernity. Whereas masculine forms of remembering and mourning are represented by memorials and commemorations, Kaisen's pre-modern women's religion, Jeju shamanic rituals, dismantles masculine boundaries and suggests an alter community that is temporary and fluid but mutually responsive to each other's grief. Through a feminist reading, this study aims to suggest the meaning and resistance of this feminine ethics of mourning and otherness.
