Performing Art in Japanese Films: Focussing on the Work by Director Mikio Naruse

本論文では、成瀬巳喜男監督の「芸道もの」映画『鶴八鶴次郎』(1938)、『歌行燈』(1943)、『芝居道』(1944)を中心に戦時期の芸道ものを総合的に考察していく。そのために、成瀬監督の芸道もので「芸」がどのように表象されているかを整理し、恋愛、犠牲、人間関係(上下関係)などの感情に訴える特徴の上位カテゴリーとなる「人情」という側面から分析していく。このように成瀬監督の芸道ものにおいて「芸」と「人情」がどのように機能しているのか、さらにこのような表象が戦時期の映画史的文脈とどのように関連しているのかを考えていく。 芸道ものというジャンルの映画は、映画と比べてすでに成熟した伝統芸能が背景になっているという点、また修行を通じて「芸」に精進するということが描かれる点から考えると、ある意味で政府が望む国民教養向上はもちろん、映画の質的向上を成し遂げるジャンルであったといえる。しかし、芸道ものは単に国策のために機能していたのではなく、戦時期に実際に観客が望むジャンルであった。このような状況の中、「芸」と「人情」を巧みに調和し表象する成瀬監督の芸道ものは、その他の映画作品とは異なる独特な世界を描き出すことができたといえる。

In this article, I systematically analyse the performing-art films during wartime, focussing on Mikio Naruse’s work, Tsuruhachi and Tsurujiro (1938), The Song Lantern (1943) and The Way of Drama (1944). To this end, I analyse the notion of ‘art’ in Naruse’s performing-art works from the perspective of ‘human feelings’, a supercategory encompassing ‘love’, ‘sacrifice’, ‘human relation (subordinate relation)’, etc. In this way, I investigate how ‘art’ and ‘human feelings’ function in the director’s performing-art works and how these representations are related to the historical context of films during wartime. In the genre of ‘performing-art’ films, the traditional arts, which have already matured compared to films, underlie them, and they describe the ways in which the characters devote themselves to ‘art’ through training. In these respects, in a sense, the genre can be conceived of as a genre that led to not only the improvement of national education as desired by the government but also the qualitative advance of films. Still, the performing -art films not only functioned for the purpose of national policies but also served as the genre desired by the audience during wartime. In such situations, Naruse’s performing- art films, which skillfully integrate ‘art’ and ‘human feelings’ and represent them, create a unique world distinct from those described in other films.
