In the present article, I examine the structural properties of the Hwasooboon narrative, which has been transmitted in Korea, China, and Japan, and I analyze the meaning emerging from the narrative structure. Hwasooboon is a cursed treasure that continuously reproduces itself when it consumes items that people desire, such as rice, money, and alcoholic beverages. Hwasooboon provides wealth for those who can acquire such items, but it does not do so for those who cannot; it may even punish them. The qualities required to acquire such items are, among other things, to value and save the lives of small animals and to assist poor and hungry neighbors in need of help. The qualities that bar the acquisition of such items include, among other things, to exchange one’s all possessions for the treasure and to be greedy. These qualities may lead one to acquire or lose the treasure, and these processes underlie the structure of the narrative. Stories with such structures describe the principles that we abide by to pursue a sound life. Of these principles, the teachings of compassion and contentment are important in all of Korea, China, and Japan, and the ethics of compassion and contentment are clearly reflected in the Hwasooboon narrative.
