HONG Gil-Joo was an intellectual in the late Chosun dynasty, who led Korean tea culture in the late 18th to early 19th century. With his friends and his family, HONG Gil-Joo created and flourished Korean tea life. This paper deals with the perspective of tea and tea life of HONG Gil-Joo. He redefine the meaning of tea by expanding from just a ‘tea leaf’ to various fruits, nuts, and berries including Ginseng tea. HONG Gil-Joo supported the attempts to make Koreanized tea-making methods and Korea’s own tea culture led by Cho-Eu and JUNG Yag-Yong. He always communicated with himself by making inner trip and with his friends and family members over making and drinking tea. To him, tea was a companion, mediator of serenity, and elegant art.
