The Spirits and Lessons of Uijae Huh Baik-Nyun(毅齋許百鍊)’s Tea Life

This paper deals with the legacies of the late Uijae Huh Baik-Nyun, his spirits of tea life and tries to explore Huh Baik-Nyun’s perspectives on Korean tea culture. Uijae Huh Baik-Nyun’s era was characterized by compact urbanization and industrialization, resulted in the loss of Korean spirit and community solidarity. He tried to restore Korean traditional spirit based on mutual communications and community-building utilizing tea life and material & physical practices including producing spring snow tea in his tea garden. His tea life can be characterized in four ways: First, the way of training(practice) is founded in simplicity. Second, the way of nation building is collaboration of theory and praxis. Third, the way of communications is the virtue of modesty and harmony. Lastly, the way of inheritance of the traditional heritage is evolutionary development through preserving and improving old ones. All in all, retrospecting from Huh Baik-Nyun’s tea life, he was a pioneer in Korean tea life and tea industries in the 20th century.
