A Study on Lee Saek’s view on Tea Life

In order to study Lee Saek’s view on Tea Life, this essay first attempted to show the backgrounds of Lee Saek’s family tea lineage, and relationship as a teacher and a student. Then the ideological background of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism were examine, they were the basic backgrounds of Tea Life that appeared through Tea poetries and Tea poetry sentences from Lee Saek’s ≪Mokeun’s Works≫. Firstly, the father ‘Lee Gok’ and the son ‘Lee Saek’ are students of Lee JaeHyun, they have strong bond as member of school and also shares same Tea Life tradition. Lee Saek was in the second best at study of Neo-Confucianism after his teacher Lee JaeHyun, so he was greatly influenced by his teacher and followed his virtuous view on tea life. In their Tea poetry, we can see the classic scholars who make tea in the same way. Through Lee Saek’s son JongHak the Tea Life was a family tea lineage as a reputable family in Tea Life. Secondly, the idea of harmony from the three religions (Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism) served as the basic background in Lee Saek’s Tea poetries and Tea poetry sentences, exhibiting its value as a drink that refines human’s sentiment, and could be said to be a harmonious symbol of spiritual culture. Therefore, Lee Saek’s view on Tea Life can be seen as constantly pursuing Daseon-il-yeo and Muwijayeun’s harmonious idea, based on continuous self-examination as a man of virtue.
