Children's Animation Video Pacing: A Comparison of Korean and Foreign Programs

본 연구는 어린이 애니메이션 프로그램의 화면 전환 페이싱을 디지털 이미지 프로세싱을 활용하여 분석했다. 4-6세 부모들을 대상으로 한 설문조사에 기반하여, 어린이들이 많이 시청한 18개 애니메이션 프로그램을 선택하고 이들 프로그램의 제작 국가를 구분하여 비교 분석했다. 18개의 프로그램 국내 11개와 해외 7개의 프로그램으로 분류되었는데, 이들을 분석한 결과 해외프로그램이 더 빠른 속도의 페이싱 화면 전환이 나타났다. 페이싱 속도 차이는 영상 길이나 에피소드 특성을 고려하여 통제한 이후에도 유의미했다. 그 동안 한국 애니메이션의 장점이나 내용적 특성에 대한 분석이 부족했는데, 이 연구는 화면 전환 특성을 국내와 해외 프로그램으로 나누어 자동화된 전산처리 방법인 컴퓨테이셔널 방법을 활용하여 분석한 특징이 있다. 본 연구는 또한 한국 애니메이션이 상대적으로 느린 페이싱을 보이는 것을 밝혀냄으로써 어린이 인지발달과 관련된 영상의 부정적인 영향과 관련된 논쟁에서 한국 애니메이션이 상대적으로 자유로울 가능성을 제시했다. 현재 국내에서는 애니메이션 페이싱에 관한 연구가 거의 없음에도 불구하고, 어린이 영상에 대한 연구의 중요성은 계속해서 높아지고 있다는 점에서 본 연구가 가진 분야 연구 마중물 역할이 높다 하겠다.

This study analyzed the screen transition pacing of children's animation programs using digital image processing. Based on a survey targeting parents of 4-6 years olds, 18 animation programs frequently watched by children were selected and compared by their origin of production countries. These 18 programs were classified into 11 domestic and 7 overseas programs. The analysis revealed that overseas programs exhibited more frequent pacing transitions. This difference remained significant after controlling for video length and episode characteristics. While there has been a lack of analysis on the strengths and content characteristics of Korean animation children programs, this study utilized computational methods to analyze screen transition characteristics of domestic and overseas programs. Furthermore, by revealing that Korean animation tends to have slower pacing, the study showed the potential for Korean animation to be relatively unaffected by negative influences related to children's cognitive development and video contents. Despite the scarce research on animation pacing in Korea, the importance of studying children's video content continues to rise, underscoring the significant role this study plays as a stepping stone in the field.
